On 15 April 1817 sparked the idea to establish Reinwardt Botanical Gardens submitted to GAGP Baron Van der Capellen, Commissioner General of the Dutch East Indies, and he finally agreed to the idea Reinwardt. Botanical Garden was established in addition to the Governor General at the Bogor Palace on May 18, 1817, done fixing the peg which marked the founding of the first Botanical Gardens which is named 'Slands Plantentiun te Buitenzorg'. This marked the founding of the Botanical Gardens with the establishment of Dutch rule to the commencement of Biological science knowledge, especially of botany in Indonesia in an organized way.
After independence, the year 1949 "Slands Plantentiun te Buitenzorg" was renamed the Department of Natural Inquiry, later became the Central Institute of Natural Inquiry (LLPA) led and managed by the Indonesian nation, the first director was Prof. LPPA. Ir. Kusnoto Setyodiwiryo. At that time the institution LPPA had six children, namely Bibliotheca bogoriensis, Hortus Botanicus bogoriensis, bogoriensis Herbarium, Treub Laboratory, Museum Studies and Laboratory Investigations Zoologicum Bogoriensisi Sea. For the first time in 1956 the leadership of the Botanical Gardens which is held by the Indonesian nation replaces J. Kasan Sudjana Douglas. For the development of plant collections in accordance with the existing climate in Indonesia, Bogor Botanical Gardens established branches in several places, namely:
1. Cibodas Botanical Garden (Bergtuin te Cibodas, Hortus and Laboratory Cibodas) in West Java, the extent of 120 hectares with an altitude of 1400 m, founded by Teysman year 1866, for a collection of upland crops wet temperate and tropical regions of sub-tropical plants. Year of Gardens 1891 is equipped with a laboratory to study the flora and fauna.
2. Purwodadi Botanical Garden (Hortus Purwodadi) in East Java, founded by Van Sleat in 1941. The extent of 85 hectares with a height of 250 m, for a collection of plants of lowland, tropical dry climate.
3. Kebun Raya "Eka Karya" Bali Bedugul-founded in 1959 by prof. Ir. Kusnoto Setyodiwiryo. The extent of 159.4 hectares with an altitude of 1400 m, for a collection of upland crops dry climate.
